• These two works are the results from my cleaning my metaphorical and actual studio mind. New dabbles in an old theme of shiny, elusive things.

I am a monthly supporter of Seva because I think that not being able to see is terrible.  Seva is dedicated to restoring sight and alleviating suffering in 12 poor countries in Asia and Africa.  Those who have their sight restored are always joyous afterwards.  I also like the fact that Seva is a Vancouver based charity.”

The new owner of this painting says… so glad to have this opportunity to get a piece of your work and assist in the work of PLAN – Planned Lifetime Advocacy Networks. I became a board member and started volunteering last autumn and have been amazed at the depth of the conversations and the passion with which this organization approaches their mission of supporting intergenerational families by developing circles of support in their communities and also working at a policy level to ensure that families and people with disabilities are heard. While various initiatives come and go, they have been steadfast in this for more than 25 years and intend to be around for the whole lives of those they support. http://plan.ca/ is their site and their charity number is BN: 131516320RR0001

  • The new owner of this painting says: “I chose to give to Cuso at this time because the Canadian government is matching gifts, 9 to 1. I thought this was a marvelous opportunity to support development in places where it was needed.”

CUSO stands for Canadian university services overseas. Each year, Cuso sends hundreds of volunteers to work on collaborative development projects in more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The person who chose to acquire this painting says:
I am choosing The Covenant House which is Downtown Vancouver. I am choosing this charity as they help at-risk youth and homeless youth with shelter, crisis intervention, outreach programs as well as many other things. Being in recovery myself, I know that with the right tools and support, there is always hope for a sober and fulfilling life. Some of the youth arrive homeless, while some live in substandard housing (such as crashing in single-room occupancy hotels or couch surfing)—but all hang out on the streets and are at risk. Street life is brutally dangerous for vulnerable youth, and when we find kids in crisis, our team is trained to connect them with psychiatrists, medical professionals and social workers, or to bring them to our Crisis Shelter for safety and support. I truly feel that Covenant House has saved the lives of countless youth. There are so many aspects of Covenant House that I cannot do it justice here.

  • the new owner says: I am very excited to own the painting of the little birdy (!) and its nest hidden amongst the wood “Shiny Wants, Deep Woods”. I currently own 2 of Susy’s art pieces: a sculpture of a beautiful, bald, rotund Buddha with the sweetest face and a large poppy painting; I am looking forward to adding to my collection.

I will donate to the Alan Brown Memorial Endowment Fund. This fund is used to provide financial aid for girls who would otherwise be unable to attend Southridge School. The charitable registration number is 13960 6917 RR0001.

  • The Downtown Eastside Women’s Center-Claimed by Nolda Ware. Here are her words:

My best friend and I started volunteering at the DEWC five years ago. My friend’s sister had died after living a hard life…and this Center had been an important place over the years that kept her safe, gave her a safe place to be and honoured her for who she was. They never gave up on her…My buddy wanted to give something back to them and show her gratitude for loving her sister – so together we started volunteering.
It is hard to believe it has been five years. In the world of volunteerism, people come and go…the true purpose and meaning of volunteering can get lost in the need to “boost a resume, get into a good school or get a good job.” When we first started volunteering, we were met with a variety of cynical comments and assumptions…”You won’t last, people just come and go, no one really cares about us or wants to be here they just want to look good, etc etc.” Through the years, we learned so much. Our initial intention of giving back – actually back fired. What we get from the amazing ladies and stories from the downtown eastside is actually way more than we could ever give. We have learned about acceptance, to never judge another human being, to listen and how to just be there – be present and open to a bigger world. Oh I could go on and on…but most important is to thank all the wonderful women and staff I have been lucky to meet from the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center for giving me the opportunity to be a better person. To Give, To Learn, To Live.
Here’s the story of the DEWC…

“For 35 years, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre has provided a safe place for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. We provide practical support, basic necessities and hot nutritious meals to over 300 women and children every day. We support women to make positive changes in their lives by connecting them to a continuum of services including outreach, advocacy, wellness, recreation, housing and skills development.
High levels of violence, homelessness, addictions and poverty characterize the Downtown Eastside community, and women and children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, injustice and injury. Founded in 1978, DEWC is one of the few safe spaces within the Downtown Eastside exclusively for women and their children.
Our community also works towards increasing awareness of systemic injustice and inequalities that contribute to women’s vulnerability. One of our goals is to bring awareness of poverty and violence issues to the general public and to the government.”

  • Shiny Gold Pebbles is changing the world….

  • A piece of art only becomes alive when someone loves it-much like the story of the “Velveteen Rabbit.” by Margery Williams. I have been creating art for so long now; I have sold pieces in private and public galleries, stores, co-operatives and by commission. I have participated in group shows, I have been juried into shows and I have won the odd award or two in those shows. I have been written about in publications, and, most importantly, I have been bragged about to numerous very patient people by those closest to me, especially my long suffering manager, my husband.

Now, I love to create- I don’t much like the rest of the formerly mentioned aspects of being an artist. Awards and accolades, and although they are appreciated at the time, do not serve to inspire me; in fact, often my muse just curls up in a dark corner with a People magazine and a glass of cheap box wine with too much of the latter. I am not going to lie, being paid for my art work is lovely, and some artworks will still be for sale.

I don’t know a lot of things…but I do know that I want a number of things to happen with my artistic practice: I want to create without being boxed in and stifled by market whims, galleries that charge 50% commission and the promise of a tidy sum. I want people to have my work who appreciate it, not necessarily just those who can afford it. I want my work to be alive in someone’s home, not lined up in my studio floor or held hostage at a singular place. I want any purchace money to go towards making the world a better place, and not just my very real and seducing world of my boot fetishes and mounting domestic debt (the latter can happily be ignored I have discovered much to the chagrin of some).

So, here are the two ways I want to change the way my art lives in the real world, not the elite world, or more commonly my closet you will find these under the subpages under “Painting it Forward” and then, ” Painting and Karma” and “Doggy style and Auctions”.

Painting and Karma: Acquire a painting through a donation to your favourite charity that supports the environment, animal and/or human rights. Each image you see on this page is available – ignore the sticker price. If you want it I will put it aside once we have made contact. Before you own it, you have to click on the image and write in the blogs space your charity information including the registered number, link etc so that people see that that painting actually helped a place, person or animal. Painting it forward with a painting that speaks to you.

Doggy Style and Auctions: For this option, send me your information if you are conducting or know of a silent auction in need of items. I donate a commissioned dog portrait, your charity gets the money and the successful bidder gets a portrait of their pooch. Best thing about this is I get to paint a fabulous creature.

Rule for both: The only real catch, for very few I am sure, is that no neo nazi’s, homophobes, misogynists, need apply, please. I will have to pre-approve the registered charity just to make sure it is aligned with my beliefs in general.
